Greece: Choose Santorini or Mykonos?

Santorini and Mykonos are probably the most popular Greek islands, or at least the ones that make you dream! Not decided yet on which you will spend your holidays? Here are some points that could tip the scales.

Admit it, it’s probably to see the very popular landscape of steep cliffs peppered with pretty white houses that you have decided to go to Greece. Santorini is the ideal place to photograph them, including those of Oia, which are the most picturesque. Decades ago, blue domes were reserved for churches. Since then, the blue and white duo has spread to all buildings. Mykonos, on the other hand, is famous for its mills.

The donkeys
Arriving by boat in Santorini, you will have the choice to take the donkey road to Fira, the capital of the island, to walk, by funicular or bus. It is possible to climb this path on a donkey (for the more adventurous, be warned) or to admire the animals once they have arrived at their destination (a better idea!). Sometimes a small flock walks around the streets of Fira.

The sunsets
The island of Santorini is famous for its dramatic sunsets on the caldera. Some say it’s the most beautiful in the world. One of the best places to watch the sun fall is the walk along the cliff to Fira. To contemplate quietly, a small glass of ouzo in the hand …

The island of Mykonos is famous for its beaches all more beautiful than the others. Some are better for swimming, such as Kalafatis beach (from where you can see Romvi Island, affectionately known as “Aphrodite’s breasts”), others surfing (thanks to the great Cycladic winds) and others at the party. Indeed, some of the most popular DJs in the world come to offer shows on the beaches of the Greek island.

Wild cats, they are everywhere on the Cyclades islands. A walk in Mykonos will allow you to see dozens! Cats are often fed by monks near monasteries and churches. This is the place if you want to cuddle these little cats! And as for pelicans, some days you will see them wandering near Chora. They are real mascots on the island.

People
If you want to be in touch with locals, to see how people really live, it is rather in Mykonos that you can have a feeling of “true” Greek life. As soon as you get away from the center of the city, you find yourself among the small white and blue houses where women are busy laying out their clothes, men enjoying their aniseed alcohol and children playing with cats. Santorini is incredibly more touristy.
