Balearic: even more intriguing in winter

An original escape from the cold in Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera between mysticism, nature and archeology

For a different winter weekend, the Balearic Islands are the right destination even in winter. Here are some ideas on what to do and see in Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera on a trip out of season.

Mystic Mallorca – In December, discovering the many nativity scenes in the city of Palma is one of the most enjoyable activities for families. Convents, churches and cultural centers exhibit their cribs, some of which are real treasures, such as that of the Palau March, a Neapolitan crib of the eighteenth century composed of over two thousand pieces made by hand and processed in detail. For a full spiritual immersion in the frame of the major of the Balearics, it is possible to stay in the sanctuaries of the island. The offer is very wide: from the Santuari de Cura which towers over the top of Puig de Randa – the highest peak in the center of the island -, to the Sanctuaries of Lluc, a privileged place of the Serra de Tramuntana with a precious artistic heritage and natural, there are many solutions offered for those who really need to regenerate mind and spirit, accompanied by their family.

Menorca, on the trail of history – Starting from the heart of the port of Maó, in Menorca, it is possible to relive a piece of the island’s history along the military route. The immense fortress of the Mola, full of underground tunnels, first defensive lines and old dust-containers, rises in a magnificent natural landscape. On foot, by bike, off-road or on horseback, you discover the history of the island enjoying the spectacular view of the coast. This fascinating journey into the past continues in the underground galleries of San Felipe, located on the south bank of the port of Maó. Another interesting itinerary is the one that accompanies the discovery of the so-called British route, a journey on the traces left – in fact – by the British during the period when the island was annexed between the territories of the English crown. Masserie, fortresses, walls, towers and museums are just some of the suggested steps to fully understand how influential the presence of the English was on the daily life of the Spanish island.

Archeology in Ibiza – Beyond the Renaissance walls of Dalt Vila, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, theatrical tours are also organized in the Punic necropolis of Puig des Molins. On the last Sunday of each month, through these representations it is possible to discover the traces of the civilizations that once inhabited Ibiza, in a fascinating and alternative way. Discovering the past of the island narrated and represented by actors is a fantastic program for the whole family, an experience that makes young and old fall in love. Through the theatrical visits, one immerses oneself in the daily life of the Punic, Phoenician and Roman eras, in the archaeological context of the Puig des Molins, surrounded by the rich collections of sarcophagi and funerary elements that earned him the recognition of World Heritage by the ‘Unesco.

Formentera and nature – There are 32 “green” itineraries on the island of Formentera. Trails that cross and add more than 100 km of tracks that can be traveled on foot, by bike or through Nordic Walking and accompany visitors to discover thousands of natural treasures such as the pink waters of Ses Salines, the endless beach of Ses Illetes, the rural landscapes of the hinterland and the iconic Faro de La Mola. The Lighthouse is located in the westernmost part of the island and from here there are several paths that lead to forests and green valleys. Instead, visiting the eastern part of the island, between the port of La Savina and Cala Saona, you will encounter what was once a quarry: a jagged coastline formed by a desert of rocks with strange and unusual shapes, called Sa Pedrera. In this varied landscape, within a wooded area, is the Can Marroig Interpretation Center. Here flora and fauna are within everyone’s reach, thanks to a wide range of interactive educational activities that excite the senses and the curiosity of adults and children.

Formentera, Better in Winter!

The Tourist Board of the Balearic Islands (ATB) together with the Patronat Municipal de Turisme de Formentera presents Better in Winter! the campaign to promote the smallest island in the Balearics as an exclusive destination for lovers of active and eco-sustainable tourism. “The promotion of the low season is fundamental for the environmental, economic and social balance of the island – says Alejandra Ferrer, Consellera de Turismo, Territorio y Comercio, Consell Insular de Formentera – who must be able to live in tourism all year long, respecting the its own natural and cultural heritage “.

The ideal period for a green tourism is in fact in the months of May and October, when the temperatures are mild and the island is less crowded. “Autumn is the ideal season to discover our island – continues Ferrer – September and October are perfect for diving, trekking and cycling, but also to get in touch with the most authentic traditions of the island, including gastronomic ones”.

If Formentera is a paradise for lovers of the sea, which can admire its rich seafaring of marine species, caves, and coral gardens, it is also for those who love outdoor activities. On foot or by bicycle it is possible to discover the breathtaking landscape of its 70 kilometers of coastline, or its rural hinterland, through 32 marked green circuits, not accessible to cars and motorcycles, for a total of 110 km with various levels of difficulty and distances. But it is also possible to immerse yourself in the island landscape with a horse ride. Throughout the year the island stables organize excursions and lessons suitable for all ages and levels of preparation.

Cortina d’Ampezzo, the “Queen of the Dolomites” has in her very heart a resplendent chalet just a few steps from the pedestrian centre of this beautiful village.

Live in the lap of luxury at Italy’s premier mountain resort, in the heart of the Dolomites, one of the unique regions in the World offering a memorable scenic and cultural experience for all seasons. In Summer the area is a magnet for climbers and trekkers alike and in the Winter the resort is an eminent part of the Dolomiti Superski: one of the largest ski carousels in Europe comprising 12 ski areas, 450 lifts and more than 1,200 km of white slopes.

A lengthy renovation effort that started from an old barn has created what is arguably the best private luxury chalet in town and that is available to rent. There is a relaxed ambience to this warm and woody chalet, which benefits from an adaptable arrangement of living and private spaces. Deep and plush furnishings, warm, muted colours and lavish throws harmoniously offset the scrubbed wood walls and floors. Discreet lighting plays its part too to add dramatic elements and surprise, from the kitchen and living areas to the bathrooms and bedrooms. Shafts of natural light from outside and within stream into the stylish interior, which presents a cocoon of comfort within which there are exposed and featured stone walls, an enclosed glass forest and ornately carved and eye-catching interior windows.

A generous indoor swimming pool and a compact high-tech fitness area are other unique features and located within a very comfortable and classy spa designed for luxurious rest and pampering in secluded bliss.

Outside this luxury is less dramatic and very natural, with a wide main terrace that overlooks the hills towards Monte Cristallo.

The luxury chalet comprises 5 floors and can accommodate up to a total of 20 guests (12/14 adults and 4/6 kids) in 9 bedrooms, which include a generous lower ground bunk bedroom (sleeps up to 4 people) and an independent master suite (with living areas, a kitchenette and a terrace with a stunning view on the 5 Torri) expertly arranged under the eaves.

All rooms are furnished with great taste and a passion for detail and the artfully arranged bathrooms are fitted with designer fixtures and neatly set into wood surrounds. Family meals can be as fun and as grand as you wish around the antique wood dining table, which seats 14 on carved and crimson chairs. Overhead, a slither of light spans the full length of the table that will add flourish to any occasion.

The garden and terrace burst with colour during the Spring and Summer offer are beguiling spaces for al fresco relaxation and socialising, as well as tempting opportunities for building snowmen with the kids in the Winter.

All told, this property is a great option for a family reunion in a luxurious haven in which guests of all ages will feel at home. The quality of the chalet and the beauty and elegance of Cortina, with its smart après-ski bars, high street shops, restaurants and nightclubs are the right ingredients for a perfect holiday.
